About Swiss Army Knives
In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener’s mother, and “inox,” or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The original product dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer’s and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor for versatility.

I gave out a dozen for gifts (including myself) to my Grandson, nephews, etc.. A good gift for travelors to function in a hotel room w just a water heater, I lived in a motel room for 3 months like that, very comfortably & much cheaper than eating out.

Victorinox Swiss Army Explorer with Collectible Gift Box

Have looked at this Victorinox Swiss Army Explorer with Collectible Gift Box so many times before, always trying to find some justification for getting it… but in this case, it’s for a gift. Already have a number of these fine Victorinox products, including the Victorinox Swiss Army Champion Plus, which sits in my camera bag, ready to go at all times. It’s perhaps one of the best all-around tools that a pro or amateur photographer could look for as far as versatility goes.

Also have the Victorinox Swiss Army Ranger, one of the more well-known models, and the model that currently sits in the glove box of my car. These models are all good examples of how well Victorinox responds to their customers’ needs over the years. They are still crafted from stainless steel in Switzerland, and each of their models includes a lifetime warranty that they know how to back up.

Check the product specifications and you’ll see that the Swiss Army Explorer has sixteen tools that include large and small blades, a can opener, small and regular Philiips screwdriver, a bottle opener combined with a large screwdriver, a wire stripper, a very handy reamer, tweezers, toothpick, small scissors, a multi-purpose hook (useful as a parcel carrier), a magnifying glass, s small key ring, and of course the the characteristic corkscrew.

This Swiss Army Explorer is the same model that has been included in the Design Collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The red and silver gift box has been crafted to look like the Original Swiss Army shield/logo, and it makes this knife a perfect present for so many people.

And a gift is what this one is for, not for myself, but for a young man who already has a basic model for everyday use. He’s expressed an interest in collecting some of the Victorinox Swiss Army products, and this one is the perfect start.

Victorinox Swiss Army Explorer with Collectible Gift Box

I’ve owned this particular model for well over 15 years! The Victorinox Swiss Army Explorer has never let me down, it is my favorite tool because it has almost any type of tool needed. I honestly love my Swiss Army knife, but I’m thinking of getting a new one (only because of cosmetic reasons).

Victorinox Swiss Army Explorer with Collectible Gift Box

I have reviewed this knife before based on the original one I owned. The one I received with the box is identical except it did not have the same magnifying glass. The standard explorer has a gray nylon magnifying glass with a glass lens. The model in the box that I received had a rather flimsy all plastic magnifying glass. Definitely not the same quality. It is a still a great deal so I kept it. The rest of the knife appears the same wonderful quality I have long respected. Astonished they would make a substandard model however.

What can I say, it’s a Swiss Army knife and the quality is great. Very sharp too, my son cut his finger the first day he had it. Some just have to learn the hard way.
