WOW!!… being a product designer, I often wonder that myself. There are some key elements that make items collectiables.. Special events or people (think of JFK memoriabla the year he was killed or really almost ANYTHING having to do with him.. or Jefferson, Lincoln etc) NOT just politicians but people in history, whether personal items or things LINKED to them. LIMITED RUN ah yes… series runs (only 1 of 20 or something made) those usually if in mint condition will fetch good in future NOT ALWAYS but usually have something to them. NOSTALGIA! 1957 chevy bel-air… in great to mint condition.. shall I say more.. (think of it.. one day a 1985 FORD TAURUS will be in a musuem!! MIND BLOWING!) … “ONE OFFs” these are custom items from watches to cars… uniquely made for individuals or special purpose… usually hand crafted TOP NOTCH quality and reflect good taste (hope so) Think of even 1960s PLASTIC CHAIRS .. go for high prices.. though plastic chairs NOW in most peoples minds are cheap junk .. in 1960s.. HIGH TECH, innovative, MODERN.. very hard to say things that will be collectiable in future. If it is in demand NOW (say everyone WANTS that new 2011 Shelby Mustang) but not everyone can afford (or get one) then most likely in future it will be a collectible item. hope this helps
